Reactive Technologies, a London-based power grid technology company, has secured €19 million in financing from the European Investment Bank, according to the company’s announcement. The venture debt, backed by the EU’s InvestEU programme, will fund research in Finland and deployment of its grid stability platform GridVerix across Europe.
What the company does

Reactive Technologies builds a platform called GridVerix that measures how stable an electricity grid is in real time. It tracks indicators such as inertia, the stored kinetic energy in generators that helps a grid absorb sudden shocks, along with the strength and stability of voltage in different parts of the network.
Grid operators use this information to spot weak points as more wind and solar power connect to the system, alongside large electricity users such as data centres. The company says the platform can help operators keep supply secure and run the grid more efficiently, while cutting the amount of renewable energy that has to be switched off, known as curtailment, and the costs that curtailment passes on to consumers.
The round

Reactive Technologies has secured €19 million in financing from the European Investment Bank, according to the company’s announcement. The support is venture debt backed by the EU’s InvestEU programme, as part of TechEU, an EIB Group initiative for technology investment across Europe.
The company plans to use up to €7 million of the loan for research and development at its centre in Oulu, Finland. The remaining €12 million will support deployment of the technology across the European Union.
Reactive Technologies chief executive Marc Borrett said: “EIB support comes at a critical moment. The rapid growth of renewable energy and large power consumers such as data centres are making Europe’s grids more complex to manage. By providing real-time measurements of grid stability, GridVerix can help operators keep the system secure, operate more efficiently and reduce costs for consumers.”
Reactive Technologies was founded in 2010 by Dr Heikki Huomo and Marc Borrett and is headquartered in London, with an R&D centre in Finland and commercial offices in the United States, the UAE and Australia.
